Veterans home-care benefits in Pennsylvania
An overview of VA programs that may help veterans and surviving spouses pay for in-home care. Educational only — not a benefit eligibility determination.
Veterans, active service members, and in some cases surviving spouses or family caregivers may qualify for VA benefits that help pay for home care. This page explains the landscape and points to official sources. It is not a VA benefit or eligibility determination.
Programs to know about
- Aid & Attendance — a tax-free, needs-based benefit added to a VA pension for veterans who need help with daily living. Eligibility depends on service history, income, assets, and a medical need.
- Veterans Directed Care (VDC) — a self-directed program that lets eligible veterans hire and manage their own caregivers, including in some cases a family member, within program rules.
- Homemaker and Home Health Aide services — available through VA health care for veterans enrolled in VA home and community-based services.
- Caregiver Support Programs — VA programs for family caregivers of eligible post-9/11 veterans (PCAFC) and general support services (PCAFC and Program of General Caregiver Support).
What you can't assume: that any veteran qualifies for all of these, that a family caregiver is always allowed, or that benefit amounts are fixed. Eligibility, approved hours, and the caregivers you may hire are determined by the VA and your specific situation. Confirm with the VA directly.
